to this day, I think Azula is probably one of the most interesting villains. Ever.Honestly, this scene made me feel choked up, because Azula obviously craved her Mother’s love, like Zuko had, but because she was so much more taken under her Father’s ‘wing’ as it were, she became a twisted version of who she would have been.
And this scene. This fucking scene.
Just take a step back and think:
- Her Mother is a hallucination here.
- Azula is bitterly saying ‘Even you fear me.’ And back at Ember Island, you learn that, even though she was a tiny terror, she was hurt because her Mother was scared of her.
- And the one thing that breaks Azula is the fact that a part of her knows exactly what her Mother would say. And she’d tell her she loves her.
- And she wouldn’t be angry, or disappointed. She’d be sad.
The worse situation would be that she DOESN’T know what her mother would say, but this is was she WISHES her mom would say.
so we’re all pretending the search didn’t happen at all, right
because i’m pretending this
because wow. as someone else said, what a complete betrayal of zuko’s entire narrative arc
and like. no man that’s basically saying “jk no one’s real parents would abuse them” which is SUCH A COMPLETELY FUCKED UP THING TO IMPLY wow
i;m
mad
Yeah I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s canon. A couple of holdouts waiting for someone to yell “PSYCH!” at Zuko but nobody thinks this bullshit is canon.
And it’s not only the whole “only step-parents abuse” thing, which is bullshit enough on its own
But I was already pissed about how Zuko gets a three season long redemption arc and Azula - abused by the exact same person - is left ranting and flailing by herself
And if we add in the whole parentage angle, it becomes “genetics make you evil, the children of evil people are always evil, if you’re not evil you can’t be the evil guy’s son” which is just…fuck you.
Biology is not destiny okay I am not doomed to turn out like my father slash abuser. Double fuck you.
Thiiiis, all of the above. I haven’t even read the damn thing and I’m all fired up about it. It’s just so wrong in so many ways.

I initially thought this was Zuko trying to give Azula a hug and failing. Don’t mind me, lol. Now I get it; it’s beautiful. The details are really great, and I like the coloring.

people who don’t sympathize with azula at all confuse and anger me
i mean yes she is fucked up and wrong
but she’s also literally just a kid, and only ever received attention from her evil, abusive father who in the end was just manipulating her
if zuko had been as naturally talented as azula was and had got as much attention from ozai as she did, he would have ended up exactly the same as her
i mean MAYBE not, you can argue that there is something inherently good in zuko that isn’t in azula, but that gets into a big nature v. nurture argument and really yall
really
it’s nurture
zuko had iroh and ursa
and azula just had fuckin ozai
so cmon now
cmon
Exactly. The notion of inherently evil bothers me too much to consider it. In terms of nurture not only didn’t she have Iroh or Ursa, but no one even gave her a hint that the path she was taking was morally wrong.
